We suppose that one of the most impressive monuments in our free tours is the Cathedral of Seville. Here we present a series of curiosities of our Cathedral:
- World Heritage since 1987, it is the largest gothic Cathedral in the world, and the third of any era, after St. Peter’s in Vatican and St. Paul in London. Inside is the largest altar in the world.
- After the discovery of America, trading in the surroundings of the Cathedral became habitual, including the slave trade, reason why chains had to be put, within which any type of business was prohibited.
- The Giralda has been, since its construction in the twelfth century until the mid-twentieth century, the tallest building in Spain, with 101 meters. There is a very similar tower in Marrakech, 70 meters high.
- The vane located at the top of the Giralda is called the Giraldillo and gives its name to the tower. Previously it was called “faith”, “triumph of the Church”, “colossus of victorious faith” or “allegory of the strength of faith”. 3.47 meters high, it was the largest bronze statue of the European Renaissance.
- Inside the cathedral is located the tomb of Christopher Columbus, brought from Havana after the independence of Cuba.
- In spite of being habitual in the Gothic cathedrals the plant of latin cross, in this we find a square form, since it was built on an old mosque.
