One of the symbols most noticeable for our users of the free tours is the presence of the word NO8DO, that can be found on signs, sewers, taxis, and even in the city’ seal. To understand its origin we have to travel back to 1282.
At that time King Alfonso X the Wise ruled in Castile, who, despite its many virtues, did not have the ability to manage the economy of the kingdom, so he ended ruining its people. His son, Don Sancho, rose against him to try to restore the order in the kingdom, being recognized as new King in all Castile except in Seville . Due to this, King Alfonso took refuge in our city until his death, leaving the motto for the seal of the city with the syllables “No” and “Do”, with a skein of yarn uniting them (“a madeja” in spanish).
So, the symbol is the transcription of the phrase “It has not left me” (“no me ha dejado” in spanish, or phonetically “No madeja do”), recognizing that Seville was the only city that remained loyal to King Alfonso X the Wise.
